For Mama…

Personalessay, personal

Yesterday was my mother’s birthday. We were at the restaurant celebrating when my dad decided to tell a story. This is what he told us:

“When your mother first gave birth to your oldest sister, I wasn’t there. I was involved in a horrible car accident and I was fighting for my life at the hospital, while your mom was fighting for hers. But she said she doesn’t want to be in a world without me, so she prayed to God that He’d take half of her soul and donate it to me. So yes, it’s her 60th birthday today and she’s still growing old. But she actually has half of a soul. And without her, I wouldn’t wake up from my coma and be here today…”

And then, he proceeded to kiss her and said…

“Thank you, my darling…”

This, by far, is the sweetest thing my dad had ever said. Yes, they fight and bicker a lot, but after 30+ years of marriage, they still love each other… and it makes me happy.

Happy birthday, Mama! I love you…
